Edinburgh’s Hidden Gems

Edinburgh’s Hidden Gems

I have lived one year in Edinburgh. Studying. Sometime partying and drinking too much coffee. Anyway, this is not the point. As I had some time to scout the city, I can now tell you where you should go and what to see when you visit the city. The list below is not a liste of the city’s hidden gems strictly speaking but are just my favorite places in Edinburgh.

My Favourite Places in Edimbourg

The Meadows

The Meadows is a park just behind the university and before Bruntsfield. When spring kicks in, loads of daffodils and crocuses blossom everywhere along with cherry trees and it is beautiful. It is the perfect place for a run, a walk, for relaxing and even for a pick-nick or barbecue. In June, there is the Meadows Festival with loads of activities, street food, performances. I took a yoga class once and it was really nice.

Kilimanjaro Coffee

Kilimanjaro is a coffee shop and brunch place on Nicholson Street. This place is amazing. It is fairly cheap and offers and wide variety of food and breakfast. My favorite is the Kili breakfast which is a typical Scottish breakfast with haggis, sausage and so on. Although I must admit I often go for the vegetarian option. Delicious. It is perfect for a late breakfast on a Sunday morning.

Dean Village

Dean village is former village northwest of the city center. It used to be a grain milling area and is crossed by the Water of Leith. The village is really old and so it looks a bit middle age. It is super cute and a really nice walk. Just walk along the river to Stokebridge and Kerr Street where you can go back to the city center. It is really small so you’ll be more walking through than visiting but I think it is really worth it. It is one of these hidden places in Edinburgh that make the city so cool!

Blackford Hill

For those of you who don’t know, Edinburgh is built on seven hills. Yes, just like Rome! The city is called the Athens of the north though. Anyway. Blackford hill offers the best view of the city because it offers a full panorama. It is also a really nice walk! Indeed, to get back to the city, you’ll get to walk through the forest. It is so quiet and peaceful, yet so close to the city. Just amazing! You’ll just have to make sure that you wear the right shoes because when it rains, the hill tends to be quite muddy.

Ting Thai Caravan

Ting Thai Caravan

No need to be a genius to know what kind of food this restaurant does. Yes you guessed, thai food! You’re too good. Anyway. This place has been my canteen when I was a student. It was barely a two minute walk away from my building. The food is so good, the place is always packed so you better be quick and avoid busy hours. I must also add that it’s rather cheap food. I brought my parents and friends there when they visited and they loved it. If you have the opportunity to go, just go!

Victoria Street and The Grassmarket

Victoria Street is quite famous for its colorful building and two level street arrangement. It is also the street that inspired Diagon Alley. Grassmarket is a square at the end of Victoria Street, full of pubs, bars and little shops. In April, there is a Vintage Weekend where you can get a so 50’s haircut amongst others. The square is right below the castle so should you want to visit it, you would just need to climb some stairs. It is a really cute square and a must-see in Edinburgh.

Have you already been to Edinburgh? What are your favorite places in the city? If you’re planning on visiting or moving to Edinburgh, where would you go?
